workshop: Playing without Tablature

$40.00

Sunday, May 3rd from 3 - 4 pm Eastern

It is all too common in the banjo world for students to develop a dependency on tablature. So many classes, workshops, and lessons start and end with the notation. It’s no surprise, then, that some students are afraid to attend a jam session or play onstage without bringing their binder full of tabs for moral support.

In this one-hour Zoom workshop, Matt Brown will lead a discussion about how to play banjo without relying on tablature. Participants will explore some basic music theory concepts and create a hierarchy of priorities for playing music out “in the real world.” Matt will share some of his ideas on how to gain independence from the written page, and field your questions about the topic.

If you have had a bad experience trying to jam without visual aids, or have been too afraid to try, this workshop is for you! Whether you want to play on your porch, around a campfire, or out in the community, you will find this conversation inspiring, and walk away with a new perspective and some practical strategies.

All registered participants will receive the Zoom link for this workshop via email on Thursday, April 30th.

After the workshop concludes, you’ll receive a second email containing an unlisted YouTube link for watching the video on demand. Feel free to register even if you can’t log on to participate at the appointed time. The video will be available to enjoy in perpetuity.
